Verizon Wireless announced today that its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network field trials in the U.S. have demonstrated wireless data speeds that are significantly faster than today's 3G network speeds.

Trials in Boston and Seattle indicate the network is capable of peak download speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and peak upload speeds of 20 to 25 Mbps. The speeds are significantly faster than Verizon Wireless and other wireless providers' current or promised 3G network speeds. These speeds are faster than some DSL connections.
Verizon Wireless has been testing its forthcoming 4G LTE network in both Boston and Seattle since August. Successful data calls involved streaming video; file uploads and downloads, and Web browsing, as well as calls with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to enable voice transmissions over the LTE network. Verizon Wireless engineers report LTE average data rates of 5-12 Mbps on the downlink and 2-5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world environments and will offer Verizon Wireless customers mobile browsing speeds comparable to customers' current, typical online Internet experience.

"Our LTE rollout plan positions Verizon Wireless to be a global leader in 4G LTE deployment. We are on track to deliver an outstanding wireless data experience to customers in 25 to 30 markets covering roughly 100 million people by year's end," said Tony Melone, senior vice president and chief technical officer at Verizon Wireless. "As device makers, manufacturers and others around the world begin to introduce newer and faster products to take advantage of these incredible new speeds, Verizon Wireless will be positioned to offer our customers new and exciting products on the nation's first 4G LTE network."

By leveraging its 700 MHz spectrum for LTE deployment in the U.S., Verizon Wireless is capable of quickly deploying a high-quality wireless broadband network with excellent coverage and in-building penetration. Verizon Wireless is currently installing LTE equipment at existing cell sites and switching centers around the U.S. as part of its extensive, ongoing investment in its voice and data network infrastructure.

AT&T Lauches Texts Can Wait Campaign

AT&T is launching a campaign to raise awareness about the risks of texting and driving, informing cell phone users that text messages can - and should - wait until after driving.

The national campaign features true stories and the text message that was sent or received before someone's life was altered, or even ended, because of texting and driving. By featuring real stories, the campaign will demonstrate how insignificant a text message is compared to the potentially dire consequences of reading or responding while driving.

For example, in one of the television spots, the text "Where u at?" flashes on the screen and a mother says, "This is the text my daughter was reading when she drove into oncoming traffic." The ad also includes the message "No text is worth dying over" and the campaign's tagline, "Txtng & Drivng ... It Can Wait."

"We explored several campaign concepts but we didn't have our 'aha!' moment until we asked one of our focus groups to take out their devices and read the last text they received," said Cathy Coughlin, senior executive vice president and global marketing officer for AT&T. "When we asked if that particular message was worth the potential risk of reading while driving at 65 mph, you could have heard a pin drop. That's when we realized the message 'it can wait' was effective in educating consumers about the dangers of texting while driving."

The new campaign will span print, radio, TV and online advertising - which will be rolled out in the coming months - as well as in-store signage, collateral and online billing. In addition, parents, high school educators and, most importantly, youth, can now visit AT&T's online resource center http://www.att.com/txtngcanwait. The site includes downloadable information about texting while driving such as a parent-teen pledge; a teen-teen pledge; a poster; a brochure; safety tips; and more.

AT&T also has launched a Facebook application, which can be found at http://www.facebook.com/att. Friends can share this application with one another to encourage each other to take the pledge to not text and drive. AT&T will also be promoting the pledge via a "twitition" on Twitter to ask followers to rally around the cause. You can follow @ShareATT on Twitter. In addition, to honor those taking the pledge, AT&T will contribute $250,000 to one or more non-profit organizations focused on youth safety and will announce the selected non-profit organization(s) at the start of National Youth Safety Month in May.

Vodafone staff at the company's Warrington call centre will have their bonuses slashed as the operator continues its cost cutting drive.

The 150 staff at the call centre, who were told of the move yesterday, will lose a monthly sales bonus of 30% from 1 May this year.

A Vodafone staffer told Mobile: 'We have just been informed (in the ultra high value department based in Warrington) that we are having our monthly sales bonus of 30% taken away from 1 May 2010. 30% reduction in pay for the majority of staff here. Not a happy place.'

A Vodafone spokeswoman said: 'I can confirm that the bonus payments at Warrington are being removed so that our reward structure is fair and consistent.'

The news comes after the operator confirmed it would close six of its stores as part of the cost cutting plans.

The store closures include four Sainsbury's concessions, as well as a store in Sheffield and in Westgate, Oxford. Staff were informed of the decision in an email.

Vodafone announced it would make 375 redundancies yesterday, with the move exclusively revealed on Mobiletoday.co.uk on Monday.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has harshly criticized Apple for imposing a draconian licensing agreement
on developers.

"If Apple wants to be a real leader, it should be fostering innovation and competition, rather than acting as a jealous and arbitrary feudal lord," opined EFF Senior Staff Attorney Fred Von Lohmann.

EFF slams Apple over draconian licensing restrictions"Developers should demand better terms and customers who love their iPhones should back them."

According to Von Lohmann, the entire family of devices built on the iPhone OS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) have been designed to run only on Apple approved software.

"This is a major shift from the norms of the personal computer market. Software developers who want Apple's approval must first agree to the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement," he explained.

"If Apple's mobile devices are the future of computing, you can expect that future to be one with more limits on innovation and competition (or 'generativity,' in the words of Prof. Jonathan Zittrain) than the PC era that came before. It's frustrating to see Apple, the original pioneer in generative computing, putting shackles on the market it (for now) leads."

Von Lohmann added that the EFF was posting the full text of Club Cupertino's infamous and clandestine agreement for all to see.

"Though more than 100,000 app developers have clicked 'I agree,' public copies of the agreement are scarce, perhaps thanks to the prohibition on making any 'public statements regarding this Agreement, its terms and conditions, or the relationship of the parties without Apple's express prior written approval.'"

Palm kicked off the 2010 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco with the release of a public beta version of its next-gen webOS Plug-in Development Kit (PDK).

According to company spokesperson Katie Mitic, the new PDK complements Palm's webOS Software Development Kit (SDK), allowing developers to use C/C++ and mix them "seamlessly" within a single app.

"The PDK enables new functionality, including immersive 3D graphics, and gives developers who have built games for other platforms an easy way to bring their titles to the webOS platform," Mitic told TG Daily in an e-mailed statement.

Palm kicks off GDC with new 3D development tools"Developers can download the beta PDK and start developing today, but distribution of games built with the beta PDK will require functionality provided in an upcoming Palm webOS update."

Mitic added that Palm currently boasts both the developer tools and the hardware necessary for a "world-class" gaming experience.

Indeed, Palm has already introduced 12 games (at CES 2010) designed by four leading developers, including:

* Asphalt 5 (Gameloft)

Not everyone can make polls, yet they can be fun, and exciting, as well as very controversial. The idea here is to brainstorm for some funny polls for the future of the water cooler section

Some ideas for some fun (and funny) polls (examples):
[/align]Should stupidity be outlawed?
Minimum IQ for US voters?
Cake, Ice Cream or alcohol, which one is more important at a birthday party?
Extend the weekend to 3 days by working 2 hours more every day?

Hello Tom and Tim,

As this is my first time posting on the forum, I find it only appropriate to immediately criticize the show and offer suggestions (or, as I like to refer to them, "vast improvements").

Firstly, hire another female host named Tammy to complete a triumvirate of hosts named Tom, Tim, and Tam.

I will offer additional suggestions ("vast improvements") in the future so as to not overload you with a large amount of genius at once.

Happy 20Ben.

Sincerely,
